
Exploring the Floating World is a project created by Steph which will examine the histories and stories behind Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints and the artists who created them. Among other things, the project will explore the history of the Edo period (during which the Ukiyo-e genre emerged), the origins of Ukiyo-e and the different subject matters depicted within these popular prints.

An Introduction to Edo Period Japan and Ukiyo-e: Take a crash course in Japanese history, from the Sengoku Jidai to the Edo period and learn about the emergence of the Ukiyo-e genre.

From Monochrome to Colour: Here we examine some of the earlier ukiyo-e prints within the Whitworth’s collections and learn about the introduction of colour to ukiyo-e prints.
